Every public library, library cooperative, regional library, library association and regional educational media center (REMC) in the state of
Michigan may register one .LIB.MI.US domain name each.
An organization will be considered eligible for a .LIB.MI.US domain name if it is listed in the Library of Michigan's Directory of Michigan Libraries under the headings
- PUBLIC LIBRARIES
- LIBRARY COOPERATIVES
- REGIONAL EDUCATIONAL MEDIA CENTERS
- LIBRARY ASSOCIATIONS
All domain name registration requests should be made using the US Domain Template.
The LIB.MI.US Registrar will accept registrations for domain names of the form:
<library>.LIB.MI.US
- Where <library> is a label that uniquely identifies a public library, a library cooperative, a regional library, a library association or a REMC (as defined in the Library of Michigan's
Directory of Michigan Libraries). <library> may contain the following characters only: 'A'-'Z', 'a'-'z', '0'-'9'and '-' (hyphen). For example, the Ann Arbor District Library, a public library, may register domain name ANN-ARBOR.LIB.MI.US.
- Branch libraries should register their domain names under their main library's domain name. For example, Northeast Branch Library, a
branch library of the Ann Arbor District Library, may register NORTHEAST.ANN-ARBOR.LIB.MI.US.
- Registrations for such domain names should be sent to the keeper of the main library's domain name, as indicated in the SOA (start of
authority) resource record for the domain name.
- If a branch library wishes to register a domain name, but the main library does not yet have a registered domain name, then the branch needs to take appropriate steps to have a domain name registered for the main library.
- No branch library can register a domain name unless its main library has a registered domain name first.
- Any request to register a domain name of a form other than the one described
above will be denied.
- Any request to register a domain name to identify a public library, a library cooperative, a regional library, a library association or a REMC that already has a .LIB.MI.US domain name will be denied.
- Any request to register a domain name to identify anything other than a public library, a library cooperative, a regional library, a library association or a REMC (as listed in the Directory of Michigan Libraries) will be denied.
- The administrative contact cited on the template must be a high-level officer (e.g. Director, Head Librarian,...) of the library organization
that is to be identified by the requested domain name.
- To facilitate verification, the cited administrative contact should be one of the officers listed under the library organization's listing in the Directory of Michigan Libraries.
- The primary and secondary name servers cited on the template must be authoritative for the domain name being registered at the time the template is
submitted.
- During the registration process, these name servers are queried for appropriate SOA and NS records; if any of the name servers does not respond
authoritatively, the registration is not completed.
